Small Robots, Big Growth: My Service Learning Story

Written by Chee Lok Yee
Today, I went to Yaumati Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road) to do volunteer work. The school was very lively, with many children—some were mischievous, while others were more introverted. The activity booth involved playing with robots. The robot's name was mBot2, which I had learned not only how to use but also how to programme during my Design and Technology class.
Today's activity gave me the opportunity to learn about the service-learning component of the school's COMPASS programme, such as communicating politely with others and helping teachers and classmates overcome difficulties. Through this experience, I realized that service-learning is not just about helping others, but also about self-growth.
Facing children with different personalities was a valuable lesson for me. For the mischievous students, I learned to patiently guide their energy into curiosity about the mBot2 coding and controls. For the introverted children, I took a more encouraging approach. I knelt down to their eye level and showed them step by step how the robot worked, which slowly built their confidence.
Seeing the joy in their eyes when the robots successfully moved forward or completed a task made all the hard work worthwhile. This volunteer experience taught me that being a good helper requires adaptability, empathy, and active listening. I was grateful that my Design and Technology skills could bring so much laughter and inspiration to these primary students.
