Buddhist Yip Kei Nam Memorial College was established in 1978. Being the first secondary school, YKN has been witnessing the development in Tsing Yi. As this year is the 40th school anniversary, we would like all students, teachers, alumni, parents and people in the community to share our joy for celebration with the theme of ‘Heritage, Endeavour and Gratitude’. There will be a series of celebration activities, including Inauguration Ceremony on 19 September 2018, Open Day on 3 November 2018, Walkathon on 26 January 2019, 40th School Anniversary Ceremony on 12 April and School Anniversary Banquet on 22 June to gather all together for celebration.
I remember the day of the Inauguration Ceremony that has just been completed. All students, alumni representatives and teachers formed the shape of ‘YKN40’ in the basketball court and on every floor, delivering a clear message: all develop ‘YKN’ spirit with one heart. Every student and teacher are indispensable. The shape of ‘40’ represents our school’s 40 years of establishment, and it also reminds us that such development wholly depends on the former principal and teachers, who have laid a solid foundation. That is why we should appreciate and bear in mind their efforts they made in the past. Looking back and forward, I expect ‘YKN’ will become one of the most outstanding schools in Tsing Yi.
The school anniversary celebration theme of ‘Heritage, Endeavour and Gratitude’ symbolizes its establishment for 40 years, which is not a short period of time indeed. I am delighted to be one of them and shoulder the responsibility for passing on the school motto: ‘To Illumine Wisdom and Manifest Compassion’. For 40 years, there have been a number of alumni who achieve outstanding accomplishments in the fields of education, medicine, arts, IT and discipline. They perform well in different professions and pay back to society with their talents. I hope all students also pass on YKN spirit. They should not only be satisfied with the present results but also keep striving for their future. Facing challenges, students should remember the teaching of teachers and try their best. I am sure all of you will achieve success in future. I feel faithful to teachers, alumni, parents and friends for their whole-hearted support. Buddhism not only focuses on faithfulness but also appreciation, contentment and less desire. As we all know, ‘humility is the best policy’, so I hope all students will be faithful to school and kind to everyone so that we can live in harmony and lead a fruitful life!
The school anniversary celebration is a golden opportunity for review and preview. This year, ‘School History Gallery’, ‘Exhibition Gallery of Alumni’s Achievement’ and ‘Visual Arts Gallery’ were established on the ground floor, through which we can review the past 40 years of development and changes and praise the alumni for their outstanding achievements. This also echoes the school’s major concerns: to strengthen active learning by a sense of accomplishment. 40 years is not a short period of time, and our school will face many challenges. I am here to say thank you to our teachers, no matter at present or in the past, who have shouldered much work pressure from the education reforms for years; on the other hand, they lead their students to face any social problems without difficulty. As the Principal of YKN, I feel proud of their professionalism and morale.
As the old saying goes, ‘the blooming banyan tree can let the people cool off, and it will last forever.’ Our school is like the blooming banyan tree. I hope it will keep providing every student an excellent place for learning. At last, please make use of this invaluable opportunity doing your best for the 40th school anniversary celebration activities.
